Stereotypes - definition and examples.

A stereotype is used to categorize a group of people. People don't understand that type of person, so they put them into classifications, thinking that everyone who is that needs to be like that, or anyone who acts like their classifications is one. For example, all Asians eat rice everyday, Goths are all about black make ups, black clothes, depressed and hated by society, or Punks are mohawks, spikes, chains, and always getting into trouble. This what I mean by a stereotype. Some of this might not be true.
There are also common stereotypes of men and women :
  • Men are stronger than women
  • Men always do all the work
  • Men are messy and unclean
  • Women are not good at sports
  • Women can't do as good of a job as men
Stereotypes also exist about cultures, religion and grouping of individuals. Such as :
  • All white Americans are fat and lazy
  • All Moslems are terrorists
  • All teenagers are rebels
  • Only anorexic women can become models
Is it good to stereotype?
NOT at all. Stereotype is not only hurtful but it is also wrong. Even if the stereotype is correct in some cases, constantly putting someone down based on your preconceived perceptions will not encourage them to succeed. Stereotype can spread hatred among people and for those who are the victims, their lives will be driven by fear.
